Researcher
Charles Lee is an Associate Professor in the School of Science at the University of Waikato and the Director of Te Tumu Whakaora Taiao–Environmental Research Institute. His research focuses on utilising data-intensive techniques, such as (meta)genomics, bioinformatics, and remote sensing, to address critical ecological challenges in extreme ecosystems, including terrestrial Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. He has a long track record of leading interdisciplinary, ecosystem-scale projects in the Ross Sea region to evaluate biological responses to climate change scenarios. Within the ASIS programme, he provides molecular ecology and remote sensing expertise for research investigating how changing sea-ice dynamics impact marine phytoplankton communities.
